We’re in this together for a better family life

Supporting families since 2021

Raising children is hard.
Raising exceptional children is exceptionally hard.

My name is Nora Young. I have ADHD. I was not diagnosed until late adulthood having spent years struggling with mental health issues. My children also have ADHD.

Leaving primary school teaching after 27 years, I have spent the last 5 years working with children with ADHD and with their families. I want them to know all the things I wish I had known years ago!

Meeting adults with ADHD is fascinating to children with ADHD. We can explain why we struggle with certain things and then we can look at what aids and supports can help us. We can explain to parents why traditional parenting advice does not work well with us.

ADHD folk have a different operating system. We can be labelled ‘lazy’, ‘disruptive’ and ‘stupid’ by people who think we are making ‘bad’ choices on purpose. Parents can feel blamed and shamed and can be baffled by their children’s behaviour.

We want to help parents support their children. We want young people with ADHD to understand how their brain works and develop strategies that help them thrive.

Our aims and values

Birmingham has, proportionately, more young people than any other city in Europe. We want to make this a city where neurodiversity is recognised, supported and celebrated! A city where young people with ADHD can learn in non-traditional ways, embrace their unique neurodivergent identity and build on their strengths, talents and skills.

  • We believe that all professionals working with families should receive training developed and delivered by neurodivergent people
  • We believe that every young person should be educated about neurodiversity and learn about their neurotype and how their brain works.
  • We believe that every young person has innate resilience and needs support to self -advocate for their needs – not be expected to mask and conform to neurotypical expectations.
  • We believe that families of neurodivergent children should be educated and supported to help their child, developing strategies and accommodations to help their child thrive.
  • We believe that every young person should be educated about Mental Health BEFORE they start having mental health struggles.

Testimonials from our community

  • The training helped me to have a bigger understanding and to see the bigger picture. Everything was put in a clear light-hearted manner. I would definitely recommend this training run by BREWS to every organisation. Great job! Brilliant!!

  • It was invaluable to hear from someone who has lived experience of ADHD and how it impacts their everyday lives.

  • I found this course very helpful. When your child gets a diagnosis it doesn’t come with ways to help your child. This course has helped me understand ADHD, why my child does the things he does and ways I can help him and our family. I found the sessions easy to follow and understand.
